Buttermilk was created in 1964 with the aim of making delicious confectionery treats. As a second-generation family-run business, their award-winning treats are lovingly handmade in-house by their craft confectioners. Stirred over open flames in traditional copper pans, their skilled team blend ingredients to bring you indulgent, mouth-watering treats. They use the highest quality British milk and butter in their fudge and confectionery, that meets rigorous animal welfare standards and ensures a fair price is paid to farmers. All their sugar is sourced from the EU and they have removed palm oil from all but a few recipes.

Sustainability is an important part of Buttermilk’s ethos and they take a holistic approach. They look at all the impacts of all aspects of production – from biodiversity to workers rights to any waste created.

Here are the key ways they're making our choccy goodies sustainable. So you can indulge guilt-free!

(1) Plastic-Free & Compostable Packaging

All new products (including their vegan and dairy-free goodies) come in plastic-free, compostable cellulose packaging. They're really proud to have found a non-plastic packaging that keeps our treats fresh and tasty!

The packaging is a triple laminate of home compostable material. So you can enjoy your treats knowing you won’t pollute our environment. It can take around 26 weeks to decompose, but even if they do get tossed in the bin, their compostable properties offer environmental advantages that plastic-based packaging doesn’t.

(2) Sustainable Chocolate & Sugar

They've also worked hard to ensure they're sourcing their key ingredients in the most sustainable way possible, without compromising on taste!

Cocoa – They opt to buy all cocoa from a farmer’s union. This means that the farmers determine the rate of chocolate, but also that they understand their local needs best.

Sugar – When it comes to sugar, they purchase all sugar from EU sugarcane. Sugarcane is the best option for us because it supports the healthy biodiversity of the environment.
